Meryem - Atalay Tasdiken

Meryem, a small-town teenage bride, is married to Mustafa. Six days after the wedding, he returns to his job in Istanbul promising to set up a life for them and send for her. Months go by. Meryem longs for Mustafa and married life, but never loses hope. Her father-in-law, Süleyman, was a lifelong friend of her late father. He chose Meryem as his son’s bride out of loyalty to his old friend. In rare moments of despair Meryem confides in her mother, who always advises patience. Once a woman is married, there’s no going back. And then Murat, who fell for Meryem before military service, reappears unexpectedly. But the Murat who returns is another man. He was traumatized by combat and has spent time in therapy. In this mindset he is a threat to Meryem; and she can tell no one. It’s a small town that remembers and is unforgiving. Süleyman thinks hard when he hears. He decides to sell the cows, his only source of livelihood, and send the money to Mustafa to rent a flat. The problem is solved; Meryem packs her bags and sets off on a new life, but not the life everyone is expecting.
