Fog and the Night is the story of a disillusioned secret service agent and his search for the missing young lover who has disrupted his orderly existence as a ‘family father’. An introvert as his profession demands and hopeless at expressing his feelings, Sedat is consumed by guilt after failing to solve the murder of his chief and close friend. His faith in the secret service is shaken as he witnesses the machinations at play both within the organization and between the organization and the state. Meanwhile, as he tries to find his lover who goes missing after falling for a former militant, he doesn’t shy from using the dirtiest methods of his profession. Fog and the Night was faithfully adapted from the psychological-political thriller by Ahmet Ümit, one of Turkey’s foremost crime writers. With a chilling mood of mystery befitting the title, the film is a far cry from the kind of crime thrillers that rely on heavy action, overblown dialogue and interlocking stories to engage audiences. Reputed for his debut feature Leopard’s Tail, director Turgut Yasalar creates a film that expertly combines mounting tension and murder with passionate love and anarchic action. –
